Sill Wins Discus as Stags Place Fourth at SCIAC Championships

REDLANDS, Calif, - The Stags of the No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team finished fourth at the 2018 SCIAC Championships over the weekend after compiling 124 points at the meet. Michael Sill (CMC) took home the lone first-place finish for the Stags, winning the discus with a mark of 44.12m (144'9") on Friday.

Day One: Friday, April 27

On the Track

Finishing just off the podium in the 3000 meter steeplechase, Evan Hassman (HMC)  and Will Kimball ( CMC) finished their race in 9:22.46 and 9:33.46, respectively, to take fourth and fifth.

In the Field

Sill earned the first SCIAC Title of his career, winning the discus throw with a mark of 44.12m (144'9"), besting the competition by three inches and setting a new personal record. He took third in the hammer throw, hitting a distance of 46.92m (153'11") to finish behind Reese Peterson (HMC) who came in second in the event at 48.26m (158'4").

In the pole vault, Michael Wagenveld (CMC) and Walker Quinn (CMC) finished just off the podium, placing fourth (4.56m (14'11.5")) and fifth (4.41m (14'5.5")), respectively.

Day Two: Saturday, April 28

On the Track

Ben Iten (HMC) and Wilson Ives (HMC) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1500 meter run, with Iten clocking a time of 3:57.32 and Ives finishing in 3:58.37.

In the 100 meter dash, Corbin Bethurem (CMC) raced to a third-place finish to earn a spot on the podium, clocking a time of 10:82, one one hundredth of a second off his best time this year.

In the field

Maxwell Knowles (CMC) finished second behind an athlete from Pomona-Pitzer in the javelin throw, earning a spot on the podium with a throw of 54.43m (178'7").

Peterson continued to perform well in throwing events, throwing to a third-place finish in the shot put at 13.79m (45'3.0").
