CMS Men's Tennis Edges Pomona-Pitzer 5-4 to Keep SCIAC Streak Going

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Warren Pham had a comeback win at No. 5 singles (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) for the clinching point as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team edged Pomona-Pitzer 5-4 to finish its 16th straight undefeated regular season in SCIAC play.

With the win, CMS improves to 17-4 overall with its 10th straight win, and 7-0 in SCIAC. The Stags have now won 145 regular season SCIAC matches in a row, dating back to 2005, and 151 SCIAC-sponsored matches in a row overall, including six postseason tournament matches.

The Stags took a 2-1 lead after doubles, with Christian Settles and Matthew Robinson earning an 8-5 win at No. 1, and Advik Mareedu teaming with Pham for an 8-5 win at No. 3. Mareedu added a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and Robinson put CMS on the cusp of a clinch with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 2.

The Sagehens were able to battle back, though, with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, leaving CMS needing to win one of the final two matches to secure the victory. Pham fell behind 3-2 in the third, but then held serve to level the match at 3-all. Facing two game points at 3-3, 40-30, Pham got to deuce and then hit a screaming backhand passing shot winner on the deuce point to earn the break. After an easy hold for 5-3, Pham then trailed 40-love in the final game but came back to win the game and the match on his first and only match point.

CMS earns the top seed and hosting rights in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
