Robert Liu Earns SCIAC Nomination for D3CA Men's Sport Athlete of the Year

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The SCIAC has selected Robert Liu of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team as one of its two nominees for the inaugural D3 Commissioner's Association Men's Sport Athlete of the Year, the league announced this week.

The award recognizes graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service, and leadership. A committee of conference administrators selected Liu and Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo player Kellan Grant as the SCIAC representatives. 

A two-time captain of the Stags' tennis team, Liu won both the 2022 SCIAC Athlete of the Year and the SCIAC Character Award. On campus, he earned the CMC Senior Student-Athlete of the Year, the 2022 Henry A. Krieger Award winner (which recognizes student leadership, athletic accomplishments, and academic excellence). 

During his career, Liu helped CMS to win three SCIAC Postseason Tournament titles and three NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2019. He finished the 2022 campaign with the top singles ranking in the West region, and achieved a career-high national ranking of second.

Liu graduated from Claremont McKenna with a dual major in economics and psychology and with a minor in finance. He was a Randall Lewis Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow (2019-22), selected as a Robert Day Scholar in 2019, was an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and a member of the SCIAC All-Academic Team.

Additionally, Liu has participated in several community service, campus, and leadership activities including as a physical education volunteer at Mountain View Elementary School, a volunteer at Pomona Promise Homeless Outreach, was a member of the CMS Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was an Asian Pacific American Mentoring (APAM) mentee.
