The CMS-ence of Julian Gordy

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Julian Gordy is a two-time captain and a two-time All-American for the CMS men's tennis team, the current No. 1 ranked team in the nation. He has also carried a 3.8 GPA with a rigorous economics-accounting workload at Claremont McKenna, and after he ends his collegiate tennis career sometime this month, he will begin his corporate finance career with FTI Consulting, where he interned last summer.

Before professional life kicks in, though, Gordy has one last order of business, as he will try to help the Stags to their third national title in program history. The last one came in 2015, when Gordy was a high school senior committed to join the program, and CMS got back to the national championship match in his sophomore season in 2017, before finishing as runner-up.

The journey starts this weekend with the SCIAC Tournament, as CMS hosts Caltech in the semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m. (which will also double as Senior Day for Gordy and fellow seniors Alfred Simental and Avinash Vemuri). The Stags also expect to host an NCAA Regional on May 10-11, and two wins there would send them on to Kalamazoo, Michigan for the eight-team NCAA Championships from May 20-22.

"This postseason is going to be the most special to me," Gordy said. "I have hopefully four more home matches, which is pretty bittersweet, but I'm very excited for it and we're hoping to make a big push onward to the quarterfinals and hopefully the finals. It would be extremely special to win with this group of guys, some of my best friends that I've ever made. I think we've all worked hard enough for it, where we're confindent going in and we know our hard work will pay off."

Over his four seasons, CMS has compiled a record of 114-16, including a 59-5 record in his two seasons as captain. He has won 150 matches himself in both singles and doubles, and has been an ITA All-American twice in doubles. But the wins and accolades aren't what he will take most out of his collegiate tennis experience.

"Being a Stag has been one of the most incredibe experiences for me, he said. "Just making these friends for life that I know I can trust with anything, and I know any time I look back on these college days, it's going to remind me of the team and just being a part of such an amazing group."
