Doubles Dominance Lead Stags to Wins Over RPI and Quinnipiac

CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis improved to 6-0 on the season with wins over No. 33 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Division 1 Quinnipiac on Sunday. CMS swept the doubles in both matches, and then won eleven of twelve singles matches for 8-1 and 7-0 victories respectively. The third match of a Stags triple header - with Division II Western New Mexico - was suspended by rain with the doubles point not yet decided. That match will resume on Tuesday, March 12 at 11 AM, with the Stags and Mustangs having split the first two doubles, and the third position at 5-all.

CMS displayed its best doubles of the young season, showcasing five different teams in the first two dual matches. Sophomores Jack Katzman (CMC) and Robert Liu (CMC) played at No.1 against RPI and No. 2 against Quinnipiac, dropping only two games in their two matches. Junior Daniel Park (CMC) was equally impressive with partners Oscar Burney (CMC) and Casey Morris (CMC). Park and Burney were 8-1 winners at No. 2 against RPI and won again 6-1 at the same position against Western New Mexico prior to the rain postponement. Park and Morris also easily dispatched of Quinnipiac's No. 3 team for their third win this spring. Junior Jake Williams (HMC) also featured in two doubles matches at No. 3, first with Alfred Simental (HMC) against RPI, and then with junior Jake Berber (CMC) in the match suspended by rain at 5-all against Western New Mexico.

The Stags also impressed in singles, using eleven different players in the two completed duals. Katzman came back from 0-3 down at No. 1 against RPI to give himself three set points in the first set, but could not convert. After losing the first set, he came back to win the second 6-3 and the deciding match tie-break 10-5. Morris was similarly challenged at No. 3 against RPI, serving for the match at 6-4, 6-5, he dropped the second set in a tie-break and then needed to save three match points at 6-9 down in the deciding match tie-break. His five unanswered points gave him the victory and the Stags their final point against RPI.

Against Quinnipiac, three Stags had to come back from first set deficits. At No. 1, Parodi lost the first set 6-0 before settling down and comfortably taking the final two sets. Park trailed 3-0 in the first set at No. 4, but then won the final twelve games of the match for CMS' third point of the afternoon. Junior Matthew Jacobs (CMC) also trailed 3-1 in the first set at No. 5, before winning eleven of the next thirteen games for his third win of the spring. Katzman earned his second singles win of the day at No. 2, while senior Julian Gordy (CMC) won in straight sets at No. 3. Freshman Ethan Carroll (HMC) kept his dual match singles record perfect with his win at No. 6.

The Stags resume their dual match with Western New Mexico on Tuesday March 12 at 11 AM, with the Stags and Mustangs having split the first two doubles, and the third position at 5-all. CMS will then co-host the eight-team Stag-Hen Invitational Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16.
