Parodi and Katzman Advance to Individual Quarterfinals

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team sent two individual representatives into the quarterfinals on Friday in the NCAA Division III singles competition with Nikolai Parodi (CMC) and Jack Katzman (CMC) both winning their first two matches of the tournament. The doubles team of Parodi and Julian Gordy (CMC) were also in action this afternoon, but suffered a tough, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 loss in the opening round to end the 2018 doubles slate for the Stags.

Top-seeded Nikolai Parodi got off to a slow start in singles play against Coe's Brady Anderson in the opening round, dropping the first set 6-4. The Stags' sophomore rallied to the tune of a 6-0 victory in the second set before putting the finishing touches on the victory with a 6-1 win in set three. He advanced with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 over Anderson before needing another third set in the second round to move into the quarterfinals. Against Chicago's Erik Kerrigan, Parodi fell behind again in the second round by a 6-4 score in the opening set, but used a strong finish to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. On Friday morning, Parodi will take on sixth-seeded Brian Grodecki from Williams.

Jack Katzman also put together a strong day in the singles competition advancing to the quarterfinals with a pair of 6-4, 6-1 victories on Thursday. The freshman opened the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jacob Zalenski of Kenyon before disposing of WashU's Bernardo Neves by the same score, 6-4, 6-1. Katzman advances to take on fifth-seeded, and fellow freshman, Jed Kronenberg of rival Pomona-Pitzer.

As mentioned the fourth-seeded doubles team of Parodi and Gordy had a tough time with the tandem of Jacob Kauppila and Ben Rosen of Bates, falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in the first round to end their run in the tournament.

Katzman and Parodi will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
