Stags get two more wins, stay atop SCIAC
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team swept a SCIAC Saturday doubleheader, defeating Occidental 9-0 at home, and Chapman 8-1 at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. Freshmen Jake Berber (CMC) and Jake Williams (HMC) led CMS with three and two wins respectively on the day. The Stags move to 22-2 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC, and sole possession of first place in conference play.
CMS won five of six doubles matches on Saturday, with No. 2 pair Berber and senior captain Glenn Hull (CMC) getting two comfortable victories. Berber and Hull have now won five of their last six and are a perfect 5-0 at the No. 2 position. Hull also notched his 17th singles win of the year, and remains a perfect 14-0 in dual matches with a victory at No. 1 singles against Chapman. Berber won his fourth singles match of the spring at the No. 4 spot against Occidental, giving CMS a 7-0 lead in the morning match.
Williams was paired with senior Max Macey (CMC) at No. 3 doubles for the fifth time this season in the match against Chapman. Their win put the Stags up 2-0, and both players then contributed in singles, with Macey victorious at No. 2 and Williams a winner at No. 6. Macey has now won 16 of 17 singles matches, while Williams is perfect in his two singles appearances this season.
In the three conference victories this weekend, CMS used all fourteen active roster players in singles, and were 18-0 in the three dual matches. The Stags play their final SCIAC regular season match this Thursday, April 20 at 5 p.m. at No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer (17-8, 5-1).
