Success at NCAAs continue on first day of singles and doubles for Stags

MASON, Ohio – Less than 24 hours after winning the NCAA Division III men's tennis team national championship, a handful of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis players were back on the courts on May 21 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in pursuit of a national title at the Division III Singles and Doubles Championships.

In singles, both senior Warren Wood (CMC) and junior Skyler Butts (CMC) won a pair of matches on Thursday which advanced them to the quarterfinal round on May 22. The field began with 32 individuals and is now down to eight.

Wood took care of business with straight-set wins over Williams' Jose Raventos 6-4, 6-2, and Emory's Alex Ruderman 6-2, 6-4. Abishek Alla from Carnegie Mellon awaits Wood in the quarters. The other Stag competing in the singles championships, Butts, won his first match easily, 6-1, 6-4 over Chicago's Nicholas Chua. However, in his round of 16 match, Butts faced a challenge having to come back from a one-set deficit to win 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-1 over Christian Hearney-Secord to move on. Butts faces Tyler Carey from Mary Washington in Friday's quarterfinals.

In doubles, Wood teamed up with senior Joe Dorn (CMC) to win their round of 16 match, 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 over Ruderman and Ian Wagner from Emory. The Stags take on Tim Rosensteel and Sam Geier in the quarterfinals on Friday.
