ITA tabs four from Stags Tennis as All-Americans

With four individuals being selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Americans, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team tied with two other schools (Middlebury and Trinity) with the most selections to the ITA All-America Teams, the ITA announced on June 11.

Over the years, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics has won 27 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Sports Trophies and has been ranked in the upper echelon of Division III programs in the annual Directors’ Cup Standings.

Junior Warren Wood of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team became the first Stag since 2004 to be a finalist in the NCAA Division III Men’s Singles Championships.

When all said and done, seeding for the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championships held true as top-seeded Warren Wood of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 2 seed Joey Fritz of Amherst both advanced through the semifinals and into the title match.

A day after capturing a second place finish at the NCAA Division III Team Championships and a second-straight 30-win season, five members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team were back in action Thursday as part of the D-III singles and doubles championships.

Prior to the NCAA Division III men's tennis championship match on May 21, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its national award winners and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis assistant coach William Ellison has been named the National Assistant Coach of the Year in addition to earning West Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors earlier this month.

Men's tennis finishes as D-III national runner-up

In the final match of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps lost a heartbreaker to second ranked Amherst 5-3. With the win, Amherst becomes national champions for the second time since 2011 and completes their season with a 36-3 overall record. CMS becomes the runner up for the seventh time in program history and second consecutive year, and finishes with the best overall record in program history of 30-2.

CMS advances to NCAA title match with win over Middlebury

May 20, 2014

In the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships, the top ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team fought their way to a 5-2 victory over Middlebury on May 20 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Middlebury is now 21-4 and plays Trinity on May 21 at 10:00 a.m. in the third place match. CMS improves to 30-1 on the season and advances to the finals for the second straight year in a row where they will face Amherst on May 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

CMS advances to NCAA semis with 5-3 win over Johns Hopkins

In the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships, top ranked CMS fought their way to a 5-3 win over Johns Hopkins on May 19 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS improves their overall record to 29-1 and advances to the semifinals where they will play Middlebury College on May 20 at 11:00 a.m. while Johns Hopkins concludes their season with an overall record of 20-5.

With four Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis players named All-SCIAC, CMS had more all-conference selections than any other school in the conference in 2014.
