Stags Defeat Redlands 5-0 in NCAA 2nd Round

#1 ranked CMS Stags Tennis swept the doubles and then won at #5 and #6 singles to shut out #13 Redlands in a second round match of the NCAA Division III Team Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday. CMS will face #5 Cal Lutheran in the Round of 16 for an opportunity to advance to the final 8 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Despite a slow start at #1 doubles, sophomores Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) and Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.) completed CMS' fourteenth doubles sweep against Division III opponents this season. Wood and Dorn trailed 2-0, and then 5-2, but won the final six of seven games for their 30th win as a pair. Earlier, Nikolas Marino (San Diego, CA) and Alex Lane (Claremont, CA) had gotten CMS' first point at #3 doubles, and Neel Kotrappa (Jr. Capt. - La Verne, CA) and Skyler Butts (Fr. - Santa Ana, CA) avenged a mid-season loss at #2 to Redlands' Connor Hyde and Nick Cummins.

Singles play was dominated by CMS, with the Stags winning first sets on all six courts. Senior Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) earned his 20th win of the season and 11th straight in dual matches, to put CMS up 4-0. Johnson has now won twenty or more singles matches in each of his four seasons, and his 85 career wins places him sixth all-time in CMS Tennis history. With four other matches nearing completion, Butts got the clinching victory at #5.

CMS is now 27-3 overall, and will face Cal Lutheran for the third time this season. CMS won both previous encounters by 6-3 scores, first at Cal Lutheran on April 5, and then again a week ago in the SCIAC final played at Whittier Narrows.
