Lane Wins Ojai Singles Title

Sophomore Alex Lane (Claremont, CA) captured the Ojai Division III singles title on Sunday defeating UC Santa Cruz's Brian Pybas. Lane became the second Stag in three years to capture the prestigious singles title and is all but assured of holding the #1 singles ranking in the West Region when the new rankings are released.

CMS had more players advance to the latter stages of the tournament than any other team in the field. In singles, the Stags had five reach the round of sixteen and two - Lane and sophomore Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) - advance to the quarterfinals. In doubles, three Stags teams reached the quarterfinals, while #3 team Russell Brockett (Sr. - Austin, TX) and Robbie Erani (Jr. - New York, NY) advanced to the semifinals.

Lane, seeded second behind Pybas in the draw, won five matches without losing a set en route to the championship. Leading 7-5, 1-0 in the final, Lane reluctantly accepted Pybas' retirement due to a sore back to take the title. Pybas returned later in the afternoon to complete a three-set doubles final.

Lane is only the second Stag to win the Ojai singles title. Lawrence Wang (CMC '09) was the first to claim the title in 2009. Four Stags doubles teams have won Ojai titles, with junior Brandon Wei (Lake Oswego, OR) and Eric MacColl (CMC '10) winning the title just a year ago.

The Stags play their final regular season home match this Thursday at 2:00 PM against Point Loma Nazarene, ranked #7 in NAIA. CMS will begin NCAA regional play May 13-15.
