Men’s Tennis Blanks #13 Trinity
CMS won its second match against a nationally ranked opponent in as many days, as the Stags used aggressive doubles play to overwhelm 13th ranked Trinity University 9-0. Led by the senior pair [pictured right] Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) and Thomas Keiffer (La Jolla, CA) at #1 doubles, CMS swept the doubles and then held on for a shut-out at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Thursday night.
After defeating 9th ranked Carnegie Mellon on Wednesday night and taking two of three doubles, the Stags’ same doubles teams came back with an even more impressive outing against Trinity. Eric MacColl (Sr. – Greenbrae, CA) and Brandon Wei (So. – Lake Oswego, OR) at #3, and Robbie Erani (So. – New York, NY) and Ronald Wu (Jr. - Los Altos, CA) at #2, both won their fifth straight matches.
In the singles, MacColl and Victor Chien (So. – Diamond Bar, CA) returned to the starting singles lineup at #3 and #6 respectively and earned straight set wins. Mac Cahill (Fr. - Southport, CT) and Russell Brockett (Jr. – Austin, TX) also won in straights, leaving Lim and Erani and #2 and #1 to vie for the shutout. Lim trailed 4-1 in the first set and then rebounded to take a 6-4, 6-4 decision, leaving Erani at #1 as the last Stag in action.
Facing the nation’s 17th ranked singles player Max Frey, Erani erased a 4-1 deficit in the first set to win a close tie-break. Leading 3-0 and seemingly in control of the second set, Erani yielded four straight games to Frey, who then held on to win the second set 6-4. Erani was broken at 2-all in the third, but then broke, held, and broke to take a 5-3 lead. Serving at 5-3 30-love, Erani looked to be on the verge of victory, but Frey fought hard to win four straight points and get back on serve at 4-5. After both players held to make it 6-5 Erani, the Stags’ #1 got his first match point returning at 30-40. Frey would save that one, and then three more in the tie-break, but not before having three match points of his own. Fighting off quad cramps in the final point of the match, Frey watched an Erani forehand volley end it at 11-9 in the tie-break.
CMS is now 7-2 overall and returns to action on Thursday, March 18 for a triple-header against Skidmore, Goucher, and Sewanee, beginning at 12 Noon.
