#10 Amherst Tops Stags 6-3

In one of a handful of March matches against top ten Division III teams, the 5th ranked CMS Stags tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to #10 Amherst on Saturday. Junior Ronald Wu (Los Altos, CA [pictured right]) was one of two Stags to earn singles wins, with his 6-1, 6-4 victory at #6.

CMS got off to a great start in the doubles, with early service breaks at all three positions to start off the dual match. However, Amherst quickly broke back and then took leads at #1 and #2 , before pulling away for 8-4 and 8-5 wins respectively. At #3, Eric MacColl (Sr. – Greenbrae, CA) and Brandon Wei (Jr. – Lake Oswego, OR) preserved their 6-1 lead and held on for an 8-5 win to give CMS its only doubles point.

In the singles, the two teams were evenly matched at five of the six positions. Wu won in straight sets at #6, while MacColl lost his first dual match of the season at #3. Mac Cahill’s (Fr. – Southport, CT) run of three consecutive straight set wins came to an end at #4, and Russell Brockett (Jr. – Austin, TX) was a winner at #5 by a 7-6(2), 0-6, (10-3) margin. At #1 and #2 CMS fought hard to win first sets by 7-5 and 7-6(5) margins, only to drop the second sets in each. Robbie Erani (So. - New York, NY) was forced to retire down 3-1 in the third set after cramping for the second time at #1. Similarly, Captain Mikey Lim (Sr. – Honolulu, HI) was pushed to his physical limits before narrowly dropping a 10-8 third set match tie-break.

In an evening match against the west region’s 9th ranked Linfield College, CMS rebounded with a 9-0 win. Mac Cahill found singles redemption at the #1 position by defeating Mark Magdaong – the west’s 8th ranked singles player – by a 6-2, 6-4 score. At the other singles positions, CMS surrendered no more than five games per match.

The Stags are now 11-3 overall and face 20th ranked Bowdoin at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, followed by #1 ranked UC Santa Cruz at 6:00 PM on Thursday, and finally #4 ranked Middlebury at 6:00 PM on Friday.
