Seeing Red

CMS Men’s Tennis took command of the SCIAC standings with a convincing 9-0 win over #8 Redlands at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday. Senior captain Lawrence Wang (Sr. – Orange, CA[pictured right]) led the Stags with wins at #1 doubles and the clincher at #1 singles.

On a day where the Stags would not drop a set, CMS came out in the doubles eager to set the tone for the dual match. Number three doubles pairThomas Keiffer (Jr. - La Jolla, CA) and Eric MacColl (Jr. – Greenbrae, CA) lost their opening service game and then cruised to an 8-3 win to give CMS a 1-0 match lead. Number two and one doubles then got one service break wins to make it a sweep and put the Stags up 3-0.

In the singles, two-time SCIAC Player of the Year Wang looked every bit like the front runner to take this year’s honors, winning 6-3, 6-2 at the #1 singles position and getting CMS it’s fifth and match-clinching point. MacColl at #4 singles was the first to win for the Stags, posting an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win. CMS was similarly dominant at #5 and #6 singles, with sophomore Russell Brockett (Austin, TX) and freshman Victor Chien (Diamond Bar, CA) dropping four and five games respectively between them.

CMS is now 19-4 overall and 6-0 and in sole possession of first place in SCIAC. CMS has extended their SCIAC winning streak to 37. The Stags host Division I UC Davis and Division III La Sierra on Sunday at 12 Noon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
