Doubles Spur Stags to Two More Wins

CMS Men’s Tennis completed a weekend sweep of nationally ranked Divison III opponents with 6-3 and 8-1 wins over #8 Kenyon and #21 UT-Tyler on Saturday. The Stags' #1 doubles team Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) and Guillaume Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) [pictured right] led the charge that saw CMS win all nine doubles pro-sets in the three dual matches.

In the morning match against Kenyon, the Stags fought from behind at all three doubles positions before recording the sweep. CMS added to their 3-0 lead when junior Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) earned the first singles visctory of the day at the #3 position. The Stags dropped #5 singles, but then clinched the dual match victory with Russell Brockett's (So. - Austin, TX) straight set win at #4 singles. Freshman Robbie Erani (New York, NY) also won in straight sets at #2 singles, giving the Stags a 6-1 lead, before team captain Wang surrendered one match point in dropping a third set match tie-break to defending NCAA singles champion Mike Greenberg at #1 singles.

In the afternoon match against UT-Tyler, CMS continued their strong doubles play to earn a 3-0 lead heading into the singles. Freshman Victor Chien (Diamond Bar, CA) put the Stags up 4-0 with his 6-2, 6-1 win at #6, followed by Ronald Wu's (So. - Los Altos, CA) 6-2, 6-2 victory at #5. After dropping #2 singles to make the score 5-1, CMS added to their lead with Brockett's second straight set singles win of the day at #3. Wang avenged a 2008 loss to UT-Tyler's Robert Sajovich at #1, and was followed by Eric MacColl's (Jr. - Greenbrae, CA) win at #4, to give the Stags the 8-1 win.

CMS is now 12-1 overall.  They face Division I Penn on Thursday at 2 PM, and then the top ranked team in Division III, Emory, at 10 AM on Friday. Both matches are at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Stags are looking to avenge a 6-3 loss to Emory in the semi-finals of the ITA National Team Indoors on February 21 in St. Peter, MN.
