2009 CMS Stags Tennis Season in Review

2009 marked another outstanding year for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags Tennis Program. CMS began it’s season at the new state-of-the-art Biszantz Family Tennis Center in January, going on to finish with it’s fourth consecutive top five national ranking. The Stags also won the SCIAC title for the fourth straight year, while extending their conference unbeaten streak to 41 matches.

UC Santa Cruz won its seventh NCAA Division III team championship on Thursday, with a convincing 5-0 victory against 6th ranked Amherst. Once again, the Slugs established control of the dual by sweeping the doubles, meaning that for the team tournament Santa Cruz did not lose a doubles pro-set in any match.

In two intense semifinal matches at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Wednesday, Amherst College and UC Santa Cruz earned upset victories and will face each other for the Division III Men’s Team Championship. Amherst College earned its second upset in as many days with a gritty 5-2 win over #1 ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis on Wednesday. The Slugs swept the doubles and then held on for a 5-4 win over 2nd ranked Emory in the other semifinal.

Nationally ranked #1 Washington University St. Louis faced #9 ranked Gustavus Adolphus in the first of four quarterfinal matches at the NCAA Division III Men’s team Championships on Tuesday. Wash U took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, winning at the #2 and #3 positions. Singles play between the teams pitted nationally ranked #1, and undefeated, John Kauss of Gustavus against #3 ranked John Watts of Wash U. The match was not completed, however, after Wash. U. took three of five singles matches to clinch the victory and take one step closer to defending their national team title.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps hosts the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships in Claremont from Tuesday, May 19th through Sunday, May 24th at the new Biszantz Family Tennis Center at CMC.

CMS Men’s Tennis advanced to the third round of the NCAA Team Championship with a 5-0 win over Redlands on Friday. Senior Captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) won at #1 singles and #1 doubles to lead the Stags to their third win over Redlands this season. CMS will now play top seed UC Santa Cruz for the opportunity to return to Claremont and the Biszantz Family Tennis Center for the final three rounds ot the team championship.

CMS Stags Tennis traveled to UC Santa Cruz to take on the fourth ranked Slugs in the final regular season dual match of the season. Senior captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) earned two wins for the Stags at #1 singles and #1 doubles, but it wasn’t enough to stop a determined Slugs team on their home courts.

CMS Stags Tennis won it’s 4th straight outright conference title, capturing the SCIAC tournament title by defeating Redlands 8-1 on Saturday. Senior captain Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) led the Stags with two more convincing wins at #1 singles and #1 doubles, and earned SCIAC Player of the Year honors for an unprecedented third consecutive year.

CMS Men’s Tennis defeated Caltech 5-0 and Pomona-Pitzer 8-1, advancing to the final of the SCIAC tournament. Senior Russell Chidester (Austin, TX [pictured right]) won at #2 doubles and #5 singles to pace the Stags in the first of their two dual matches on Friday. Chidester was one of five Stags to get wins in both singles and doubles. The Stags will face Redlands in the final on Saturday at 10:00 AM at Redlands East Valley High School.

CMS Men’s Tennis defeated Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 on Saturday night, clinching its fourth straight undefeated regular season conference title, and making them top seed in the SCIAC tournament next weekend at Redlands. The Stags were led against the Sagehens by junior Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI [pictured right]), who won at #1 doubles and #3 singles.
