Stags Down Nationally Ranked Foe

The men's tennis team defeated 11th-ranked University of Mary Washington by a score of 6-3 on Wednesday. The Stags, playing their first dual match in ten days, had to rally from a 2-1 deficit after the doubles to secure the victory.

CMS fell behind after the doubles in its third straight dual match against a nationally ranked opponent, with first time pair Lawrence Wang (SO, Orange) and Evan Feldhausen (SR, Tucson, AZ) earning the Stags' only win at #2. However, after the doubles, CMS came to life in singles, with decisive wins at #3, #4, #5, and #6. In each of the four positions, CMS did not lose more than three games. Senior Jack DePaolo (Asheville, NC) got the Stags even at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles. DePaolo was followed by doubles partner Eric Chow (SR, Sunnyvale) at #3 singles, a 6-1, 6-1 winner. Junior Ben Hough (Spokane, WA) put CMS up 4-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #5 singles, and Wang clinched the victory for the Stags at #1 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over #6 ranked John James from UMW.

After a five day respite for Spring Break, the Stags return to the practice courts on Tuesday to prepare for Stag-Hen Invitational on March 16-17. The tournament will feature two pools of four teams, seven of which are nationally ranked, Emory (#1), CMS (#3), Washington Univ. (#8), Kalamazoo (#13), Carnegie Mellon (#14), Bowdoin (#15) Pomona-Pitzer (#27) and Linfield. The Stags open play on Friday, March 16 at 1:30 PM against Carnegie Mellon.
