Stags Split with Caltech and APU
CMS Men's Tennis played a rare Friday doubleheader, and split matches against Caltech and Azusa Pacific University. CMS won 9-0 against SCIAC opponent Caltech, and then lost 6-3 to APU.
The Stags' Kirthi Narasimhan (JR - Sugar Land, Texas) played at the #1 position and earned his second singles win without a defeat in conference. Freshmen Spencer MacColl (Greenbrae, CA) and Thomas Keiffer (La Jolla, CA) also won convincingly at positions #3 and #4. The two also played doubles together at the #2 position and were victorious.
Against #2 NAIA ranked Azusa Pacific University, the Stags missed a great opportunity to lead after the doubles, before dropping a 6-3 decision. Seniors William Ellison (Shaker Heights, OH) and David Oehm (Menlo Park, CA) had a chance to put the Stags up 2-1 after doubles. Despite a 7-2 lead and a match point returning at 7-8, the Stags' #1 pair lost a heartbreaker 9-8(5). Lawrence Wang (SO - Orange, CA) was the lone CMS player to win in both singles and doubles, earning victories at #2 doubles and #1 singles. Freshman Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) was also impressive in battling back from first set that he lost 6-0 to win in three sets and get the Stags other singles point.
Next up for CMS Men's Tennis is a doubleheader on Saturday at home against SCIAC opponent Whittier College (9:30 AM), and on the road against Division I Loyola Marymount University (2:30 PM). With the split on Friday, the Stags are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.
