Stags Swim and Dive Sweeps Cal Lutheran, La Verne in SCIAC Tri-Meet

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Tyler Headley swept the butterfly events, Evan Deedy swept the breaststroke, Ethan Sattley earned two diving wins, and Anderson Breazeale won two individual races for the second straight day as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team swept Cal Lutheran and La Verne in a SCIAC tri-meet on Saturday.

The wins improve the Stags record to 6-1 in the SCIAC and 6-4 overall, with the other three defeats coming to Division I programs (UC San Diego, CSU Bakersfield, and California Baptist).

CMS swept the diving points, as Sattley, Luke Vlases, Jack Griffith and Cyrus Gaylord went 1-2-3-4 on the one-meter with Sattley earning 291.25 points. Sattley, Griffith, Ben Smith and Gaylord went 1-2-3-4 on the three-meter with Sattley's 282.80 the winning score.  

The Stags showed their swimming dominance in the opening race, as they had the top two finishing teams in the 200-yard medley relay. Anderson Breazeale, Evan Deedy, Frank Applebaum and Soon Young Kwon were first in 1:35.04, followed by Grant Stucky, Spencer Merodio, Weston Crewe and Matthew Shield in 1:37.11. 

Breazeale, who won the 200 free and the 300 back in yesterday's distance meet at California Baptist, kept his individual win streak going in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.73, a margin of almost two seconds. Stucky earned a win in the 100 back in 54.22, edging out Applebaum, who finished in 54.43. 

Deedy followed by leading a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 59.83, followed by Steven Tran in second and Merodio in third. 

Headley picked up the first of his two wins in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.79. as the Stags again went 1-2-3, with Henrik Barck second and Drew Schmidt third. Dylan Krueger followed by closing out the first swimming session with a 50 free win in 21.33, with Jeremy Tan in second. 

After an intermission, Breazeale earned his fourth win of the weekend in the 200 back, finishing in 1:56.07, followed by Tan in second and Barck in third. Deedy picked up his second win of the day in the 200 breast in 2:12.12, with Schmidt in second. 

Lucas Lang picked up a close win in the 500 free, touching the wall in 4:43.54, just over two seconds ahead of Cole Weiderman of Cal Lutheran in 4:45.77. Headley earned a dominant two-second win in the 100 fly in 52.05 for his second win, and Merodio picked up an individual win in the 400 IM in 4:10.24, with Steven Tran second. 

Tan, Breazeale, Applebaum and Krueger capped off the meet with another dominant relay win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 3:08.39, a margin of just under 6.5 seconds. 

CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it hosts Redlands for a Senior Day meet on Jan. 27.
