CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Opens SCIAC Championships with Two Runner-Up Finishes

COMMERCE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team finished second in both relay events on Thursday in an abridged opening day of the 2019 SCIAC Swimming Championships.

The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Dave Makhervaks, senior Tyler Welty, sophomore Marco Conati and sophomore Andreas Roeseler finished in 1:31.85, finishing behind Pomona-Pitzer and holding off Caltech by .14 in a very close finish for second.

The 800-yard freetyle relay team also picked up 38 points with a second-place finish, with senior Aaron Lutzker, junior Ben Culberson, freshman Michael Lee and senior Jackson Crewe coming in with a time of 6:47.65. Crewe swam a strong anchor leg, which was just .07 behind his Sagehen counterpart.

The opening day on Thursday featured only the two relays as the event gets going full speed tomorrow, with prelims in the morning at 9 a.m., followed by finals at 5 p.m. Pomona-Pitzer heads into tomorrow with a 128-108 lead over CMS, with only the two events today factored into the team scoring, while Redlands is third with 92.
