Upward trend at NCAAs continues as Stags finish week in fifth
SHENANDOAH, Texas – For the third-straight season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming & diving team secured a top-10 finish at the NCAA Division III Championships. This season, the Stags wrapped up the four-day NCAA Championships which ended on March 21, with a fifth place finish, which continues the program's upward trend at nationals.
Over the last four seasons, CMS has finished in 27th (2012), 10th (2013), 7th (2014) and now 5th.
The competition wrapped up Saturday and CMS totaled 204 points during the four days of competition. Kenyon won the team championship with 468 points.
Junior Alex Poltash in third place in the 100-yard freestyle with a championship finals time of 44.22. His preliminary time of 44.06 set a CMS and conference record, the previous record held by Redlands' Tyler Harp sat at 44.60 since 2012. Poltash held the previous CMS record.
On the 3-meter boards, senior James Stevick closed out his week with a third place finish in the consolation final, 11th place overall. He dove his way to a score of 492.85 in the consolation finals.
After earning All-America honors in the 100 free, Poltash swam the lead leg of CMS' 400-yard freestyle relay event in the championship final. The team of Poltash, sophomore Matthew Williams, senior Patrick Shultz and junior Joseph Hinton finished in eighth with a time of 3:01. 24.
