Increased leads for Stags and Athenas at second day of SCIAC Championships

WHITTIER, Calif. – On day two of the 2015 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships, more records fell and numerous NCAA 'B' cuts were achieved. The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's and women's teams both increased their respective leads with more victories.

The CMS women scored 246 points on the day and still sit on top with 422 points. For the men, CMS leads the team standings with a tally of 431.5, more than 100 points better than the current second place, Pomona-Pitzer with 296.5.

The reigning SCIAC Swimming & Diving Male Athlete of the Year James Stevick (CMC) successfully defended his conference title on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 613.90. Stevick was joined by teammate Patrick Quarberg (CMC) who placed second.

In the men's 500 freestyle, Cameron Whiting (CMC) won with a faster than time than what he swam in the morning's preliminary heats. He also set a new meet record by two seconds.

Emily McKinnon (2:07.94) placed third in the women's 200 individual medley

In the women's 50 freestyle, sophomore Kelly Ngo (23.67) touched five hundredths of a second after the first place finisher and third place went to freshman Lorea Gwo in 24.14 for her first All-SCIAC recognition.

For the men's 50 free, junior Alex Poltash jumped from his second seed spot to the top of the podium with a sub 21 seconds swim of 20.60.

Both CMS teams won the 200 freestyle relay events in an electrifying evening atmosphere. The Athenas team of Ngo, Stephanie DoiCourtney Chan and Gwo combined for a winning women's time of 1:35.46 while the Stags team of Poltash, Matthew WilliamsPatrick Shultz and Joseph Hinton recorded a time of 1:21.97.
