Rafael Otero Wins SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Rafael Otero of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Sept. 10, the conference office announced today.
Otero scored three goals in two games for the Stags, which went 1-0-1 on its trip to Oregon. He had the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the first half of a 3-0 win over Willamette and then had both goals in a 2-2 tie with Pacific Lutheran, erasing both 1-0 and 2-1 deficits with second-half tallies.
Otero scored his first goal of the game when he maneuvered through tight traffic just outside the top of the six-yard box midway through the second half to tie the score 1-1. After the Lutes went back ahead, he came up with a big strike with just over four minutes remaining. He took a corner kick for the Stags and then circled back around to the top of the 18 when the ball was cleared back out, rifling a shot into the upper-right corner from 20 yards away to give CMS the 2-2 tie.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it opens SCIAC play with a home game against Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m.
