Trevor Swartz Named New Head Coach for CMS Men’s Soccer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After serving as an assistant coach with the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team during the 2021 season, when he helped the Stags to an undefeated regular season in SCIAC play, Trevor Swartz has been named the program's new head coach, effective May 1, it was announced today by Director of Athletics Erica Perkins Jasper.

Swartz joined the CMS staff last summer as the top assistant to then-head coach Ryan Fahey (CMC '10), who left in February to take the associate head coaching position at the University of Connecticut. Fahey, Swartz and assistant coach Stefan Gonzalez were named the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year after leading the Stags to a 10-0-2 conference record, the program's first undefeated season in league play since 1993.

CMS also went undefeated against Division III teams during the regular season for the first time in program history. The only regular season defeat came in overtime to NAIA program Westmont in the opening week of the year (Sept. 3), which was followed by an eight-game winning streak and a 16-game (14-0-2) unbeaten streak, before the Stags ended the fall with a 14-2-3 record.

"We are thrilled that Trevor has accepted our offer to remain at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as the new head coach," said Perkins Jasper. "He had a big part in our success this fall, and he fully earned the respect of both his team and his colleagues. He stood out to the search committee as someone who has a tremendously bright future in the coaching profession, and we're excited to see where the program can go under his leadership."

"I am extremely excited to continue to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer program as the new head coach, and to be able to continue being a part of the Claremont community," said Swartz. "Being a member of the CMS men's soccer program has been a transformative experience for myself, and I can't wait to help facilitate that experience for current and future players."

Swartz was a four-year standout for the Indiana men's soccer team from 2015-18, leading the nation in assists as a senior with 16, when he served as a team captain. He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection, and helped Indiana reach back-to-back College Cups, finishing as the runner-up in 2017 and as a semifinalist in 2018, when the Hoosiers ended the regular season ranked No. 1 in the country.

In his senior season, Swartz had six assists in the NCAA Tournament on Indiana's seven goals. He had three in a 4-0 win over Connecticut, two in a 2-0 win over Air Force, and one in a 1-0 win over Notre Dame. Indiana finished the season with a 20-3-1 record after falling to Maryland in the national semifinals.

In 2017, he scored the tying goal in the regional finals against Michigan State, which the Hoosiers won on penalty kicks, and then assisted on the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over North Carolina in the national semifinals. Indiana's 1-0 loss in the national championship game was its only defeat of the season, as it finished 18-1-6.

After finishing his collegiate career, Swartz went on to the professional ranks, where he played one season with Toronto FC 2 and one season with the Greenville Triumph in South Carolina, where he was part of a USL Championship team in 2020. Around his professional career, Swartz also gained coaching experience, serving as a volunteer on the coaching staff at Sacramento State in 2019 and at DePaul in 2020.

"I welcome Trevor Swartz as the permanent head men's soccer coach for CMC and Harvey Mudd," said Jonathan Petropoulos, the John V. Croul Professor of European History at Claremont McKenna, who served on the search committee. "Trevor already has an excellent understanding of the culture of the Claremont Colleges - how to balance the academic and athletic components of students' lives - and he has already enjoyed great success as an assistant coach. I look forward to working with Trevor, hopefully for many years to come."

A Cameron Park, California native, Swartz played at Ponderosa High School, where he set the school record for goals scored (62) and was invited to play in the 2013 High School Soccer All-America Game.

"I just want to say that I am thrilled and excited that Trevor Swartz will be our next Stag head soccer coach," said former CMS head coach Stephen Davis, Russell K. Pitzer Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus at Claremont McKenna, who assisted with the search process. "He is enthusiastic, passionate about Stag soccer, and knowledgeable. He will be a great coach."

Swartz graduated from Indiana's Kelley School of Business as a triple major in economics, public policy analysis, and business analytics, and then earned his master's degree from Concordia University-Irvine in Coaching and Athletic Administration in 2021. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore, junior and senior, and served on the Indiana Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

"I would like to thank Erica Perkins Jasper and the search committee for trusting me to be the next leader of this program," said Swartz. "The athletic department is doing some very special things, and I am honored to be a part of its journey moving forward. I would also like to thank my mentors Todd Yeagley, Mark Plotkin, Ryan Fahey and Michael Linenberger for the opportunities they provided to me as a young coach. The opportunity to work under these four men has allowed me to understand what it takes to run a successful college soccer program. I have seen first-hand what the best cultures and programs in college soccer look like from within and I am excited to implement it at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps"
