Stags shut out Sagehens 1-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In this season's first installment of the Sixth Street Rivalry, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team held onto the 1-0 shutout win to beat Pomona-Pitzer to open up conference play. Senior Ryan Karle (CMC) recorded his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute on a cross from freshman Isaiah Alba (CMC).

The match started off with two quick yellow cards, one for each team, foreshadowing the aggressive play for the remainder of the match.

CMS had their first big opportunity when senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) ripped a shot headed toward the left upper corner in the 15th minute. The Sagehen keeper, Ben Mitchell, managed to get a hand on it, deflecting it left of the goal. The Stags then maintained possession and had a corner kick from each side by seniors Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) and Michael Crowley (CMC).

Eighteen minutes later, Karle found the back of the net with a header to give the Stags the 1-0 advantage going into halftime.

After the break, CMS offense was headed toward the south goal. Freshman Adam Singer (CMC) launched a long throw in from the right side that Crowley ultimately got a head on, only to be saved by Mitchell again.

The Sagehens were unable to seize two goal opportunities in the 51st and 54th minutes with shots by Dillon Jacob, Barrett Fischer and Voja Maric.

Karle was almost able to double his goals for the night when he found himself in a one-on-one situation with the keeper in the 71st minute. As he received a pass across the middle of the field from the left, the keeper had abandoned the goal line to come out and intercept it. Karle's shot ended up just wide right.

The defensive line, namely senior Cole Mora (CMC) and Singer, delivered a strong performance only requiring senior Alex Choi (CMC) in goal to make two saves in the evening. Offensively, the Stags out-shot PP 19 to eight with Karle leading at five, including two on frame.

Next up for CMS (2-0) are two home games this week at 7 p.m.: Occidental on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and Pacific (Ore.) on Friday, Sept. 9.
