Decisive win over Cal Lu propels Stags into fourth place

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team came out guns blazing in the Wednesday night contest against Cal Lutheran Kingsman, winning 5-1. CMS got on the board early and never looked back, taking a four goal lead in the first 45 minutes of play.
The first two scores for the Stags were off free kicks. Senior forward Hogan Marhoefer (CMC) took a penalty kick in the eighth minute, burying it in the lower left corner as the keeper dove right. Four minutes later, junior Michael Crowley (CMC) nicked the cross bar off another free kick resulting in a 2-0 advantage for the Stags.
Marhoefer earned his second goal on the night when junior midfielder Alex Censullo (CMC) beat the Kingsman defense down the right side and delivered a low ball to Marhoefer, positioned nicely to put CMS up 3-0.
With time winding down in the first half, junior Ian Shelton (CMC) won a second ball off a header from freshman Aidan Johnson (CMC) and finished it making the score 4-0 going into halftime.
Johnson scored one of his own in the 68th minute after the lanky Michael Wagenveld (CMC) got through three CLU defenders and passed it off to Johnson. This was Johnson's second collegiate goal.
The Kingsmen rallied late in the game as Aspen Smither was assisted by Branden Vogl in the 85th minute. For CLU, Brandon Kearney led the team with four shots, one of which was on target.
Next up for the Stags is fifth place Chapman as fourth place CMS (3-3-3, 3-2-2) travels down to Orange to take on the Panthers (4-4-3, 3-3-1) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 pm. CMS returns home on Monday, Oct. 12 in a SCIAC matchup with Redlands.
