Consistent attacking leads to 1-0 win vs. Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team came out ready to play under the hot sun on Saturday afternoon in the SCIAC matchup with Whittier College. The Stags triumphed over the Poets 1-0 off a header goal by sophomore Michael Wagenveld (CMC).

CMS got off 10 shots in the first half while the Poets only managed four, barely challenging sophomore Daniel Cui (CMC) in goal. At the completion of the first 45 minutes, the score remained tied at 0-0 but the momentum favored the Stags.

The majority of the game was played in Whittier's half as the CMS players were decidedly the aggressors.  The Stags also seemed to be the fitter team with Whittier's players tiring as the first half wore on.

Six minutes into the second half, senior Hogan Marhoefer (CMC) beat a defender on the right side and was able to get a shot off, missing just left of the goal. Marhoefer led CMS with seven shots in the game, all of them only slightly wide or high.

In the 61st minute, Wagenveld substituted in for CMS and shortly thereafter was presented with a beautiful ball from junior midfielder Alex Censullo (CMC). Censullo drove down the right side of the field and served it back into the box from almost the end line, perfectly placed for the 6-foot-5 Wagenveld to head it past the keeper. With that, the Stags took the 1-0 lead which is where the game stayed for the remainder of the time.

CMS had another excellent opportunity in the 73rd minute when junior Ryan Karle (CMC) fired a shot off the left post.

The defense had another solid performance, notching CMS' second shutout of the season. Freshman Patrick Thomas (CMC) was an anchor in the middle of the field, distributing to the wings and winning many balls in the air. After the win, head coach Matt Edwards said, "I was pleased with our team's effort and application throughout the game. We can build off this performance and continue to improve."

After going 2-1 this week, the Stags (2-3-1, 2-2) will travel to the current top seed in SCIAC, Occidental (6-0-1, 3-0-1) on Sept. 21. CMS then hosts Pomona-Pitzer in the annual Sixth Street rivalry game on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. on Pritzlaff Field.
