Hat trick for Lichtenberg, Stags win 5-4 in OT for final home game

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Sophomore Elijah Lichtenberg scored the first three goals of his collegiate career in the same night for a hat trick, contributing to the 5-4 win over Whittier in the Stags' final match at home in the 2014 season. Despite being out of the running for the SCIAC tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's team played hard for Monday night's win.

Junior Taylor Lemmon and Lichtenberg had great chemistry working down the left side of the field. With Lemmon's speed and Lichtenberg's sure-footed striking, the first two Stags' goals were scored by this duo, Lemmon with both assists.

Lichtenberg found the back of the net for the first time in the 19th minute but then Whittier scored two quick goals by Dylan Fortin and Brian Russell to give the Poets the 2-1 advantage at half time.

Lichtenberg scored again early in the second half and then CMS took the 3-2 lead when the ball deflected off one of Whittier's players into their own goal.

Denzel Hartshorn for Whittier scored twice within 36 seconds at the 64 minute mark.

With just 30 seconds left on the clock, the Stags tied the game at 4-4.  Sophomore Mehron Abdi connected with Lichtenberg who took one touch past the keeper and easily scored on the open net and forced the game into overtime.

With momentum on their side, the Stags took five shots in the overtime period, three of which were on frame. In the 98th minute, sophomore Michael Crowley took a corner kick from the left side and placed it perfectly for Abdi, positioned at the near post, to head it into the goal for the game winner.

On the night, CMS out-shot Whittier 22-18, nine of which were taken by Lichtenberg.

The Stags (8-7-1, 7-7-1 SCIAC) travel to Caltech (0-17-1, 0-14-1 SCIAC) for their final game of the 2014 season.
