CMS Men's Golf Earns Bid to NCAA Division III Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team, which finished a close second in the SCIAC Championships, earned one of the eight at-large bids available to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, which will be held next week (May 14-17) at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada.

CMS, which was ranked No. 11 in the final regular season poll from the Golf Coaches Association of America, nearly rallied on the final day of the SCIAC Championships to earn the automatic bid, coming back from 10 shots down to Redlands to pull within two strokes. The Bulldogs held on, though, for the four-shot win, leaving the Stags' future uncertain.

The NCAA announcement on Monday included CMS in the Pool C selections, which will send the Stags back to nationals, where they will try to come back with some NCAA hardware again. CMS has finished in a tie for third in each of the last two NCAA Division III Championships (the top four receive NCAA trophies), which is tied for the second-highest finish in program history, behind only the national title won by the 2016 team.

Carnegie Mellon, Huntingdon, Saint John's, Sewanee, Texas-Dallas, Washington and Lee and Wittenberg were the other Pool C selections from the NCAA, joining the 34 automatic qualifiers and Emory, a Pool B selection. After the first 36 holes on Tuesday and Wednesday, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams.

CMS will be making its 11th straight appearance as a team at the NCAA Championships, dating back to 2012 (and skipping two years due to the pandemic).
