CMS Men's Golf in Seventh after First Day of Bulldog Invitational

GolfStat Scoring

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team stands in seventh place at +11 after Monday's first two rounds of the Bulldog Invitational at Redlands Country Club, 11 shots off the lead heading into the third and final round tomorrow.

Willamette currently leads at even par, with Schreiner second at +5, out of the 14 teams in the field. On the individual leaderboard, Yuefeng (Michael) Ma is in eighth place at one-under par on the individual leaderboard, while Alex Yun (ninth) and Will Parker (tied for 10th) are also in the top 10 out of 81 competitors, while playing as individuals and not factoring into the CMS team scoring. Acikalin Leon of Arizona Christian leads at -7.

CMS held a four-shot lead after the first 18 holes, shooting a 279 (-1) as a team, behind 67s from both Ma and Kevin Jiang. Ma dropped to -3 with an eagle on the 17th hole, when he holed his approach shot from 100 yards out, landing it three feet past the hole and spinning it back into the cup. Jiang, meanwhile, had five birdies and two bogeys over his first round.

The second round saw the Stags face some adversity as they combined for a 292 (+12). They are still well within striking distance, though, in a cluster of teams chasing Willamette, just three shots behind two teams tied for third, and one shot behind two teams tied for fifth.

Riley Lai had a 69 on his second round, including birdies on his 16th and 17th holes to move into the red in the final stretch, and up to a tie for 14th on the individual leaderboard. Parker shot in the red in his second round with a 69 as well, birdieing his final hole of the day (No. 12). Yun shot a 71 over the second round, including a stretch of three birdies in a four-hole span on No. 15, No. 16 and No. 18 (after starting on the 10th).

CMS will be back in action for the third round of the Bulldog Invitational tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
