CMS Men's Golf Surges to No. 4 in Latest National Rankings
CLAREMONT, Calif. - After winning its two fall tournaments, with the top two 54-hole team scores in program history, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team jumped from No. 15 in the preseason rankings to No. 4 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III coaches poll, which was released this afternoon.
CMS won the California State Intercollegiate in September by 21 strokes, setting a new program record with an 833 over three rounds, which was 31-under par. The Stags then shot an 843 (+3 to win the Redlands Bulldog Invitational by six strokes one week later to start out its season with two first-place finishes.
Mason Chiu was the individual medalist at the Cal State Intercollegiate after shooting a -7 in his first round of the season. Chiu didn't compete at the Bulldog Invitational, but Will Parker (third) and Yuefeng (Michael) Ma (fifth) earned top-five finishes under par to lead CMS to its second team win.
CMS is behind only Emory, Methodist and Huntingdon in the latest Bushnell poll. Illinois Wesleyan is fifth, while Redlands also represents the SCIAC at No. 22.
The Stags, who have won five of their last six events, dating back to an abbreviated 2019-20 season before the pandemic, will compete again on Feb. 21, when it takes part in The Joust at Goose Creek, hosted by California Baptist.
