VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team capped off a dominant opening tournament by winning its third straight round on Tuesday at the California State Intercollegiate Tournament, shooting -11 as a team to win by 21 strokes over The Master's University.
The three-day total for the Stags of 833 (-31) shattered the program record for low score over 54 holes. The previous mark of 847 was set two years ago at the Redlands Invitational, which eclipsed the previous mark of 849 by two, which was set in 2016-17, the year following the program's first national title.
Mason Chiu shot a 65 in his second round on Monday with seven birdies and no bogeys, and held on to win individual medalist honors with a -11, one stroke ahead of Connor Dunlop of La Verne. It was his first tournament action since 2019, when he won the SCIAC Championship by seven strokes and came in 11th at the NCAA Division III Championships.
The top four golfers for CMS were all in the top 10 in the 60-golfer field representing 10 schools, seven of which were from the SCIAC. Yuefeng (Michael) Ma shot a 65 on Tuesday, which vaulted him into a tie for third after he began the day in 11th place. Will Parker moved up to eighth place with a 68 on Tuesday to finish with a -4 after coming into the day even par. Kevin Jiang, meanwhile, tied for ninth on the tournament at -3, after starting out with a 67 in the first round on Monday.
CMS shot a -13 in its first round on Monday, and followed up with a -7 in its second round to drop to -20. The Stags were the only team to shoot in the red in the second round, which was played in tougher conditions with wind and fog. On Tuesday, CMS again had a sensational round to prevent the door opening for anyone else to have a comeback, bed by the 65 from Ma.
Ma finished his final round with nine birdies in 18 holes, coming out of the gate with four in his first five. Parker also had three birdies in his front nine to take the turn at -3, and then had an eagle on the par-five 14th hole, which he followed with a birdie on the 15th to move into eighth.
Four of the five CMS golfers also closed out the tournament with a birdie on the 18th, as the Stags ended with a flourish.
CMS will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday of next week for its second fall tournament.
