CMS Men's Golf Shoots -13 in First Round of New Season

VENTURA, Calif. - After not competing for over a year and a half, the CMS men's golf team picked right up where it left off on the first day of the California State Intercollegiate Tournament, taking an eight-shot lead at -13 after the first round at Olivas Links Course.

The Stags are eight shots ahead of both The Master's University and Occidental after the first round, with La Verne in fourth at -4, and Pomona-Pitzer in fifth at -1. The second round will take place later on Monday, and the third and final round tomorrow morning.

On the individual leaderboard, Kevin Jiang holds the top spot for CMS at -5, one shot off the lead, after shooting a 67 in his first collegiate round. Mason Chiu is tied for fourth at -4, and Yuefeng (Michael) Ma is tied for seventh at -3. Zach Torrey is also in the red for the Stags with a -1, while Will Parker is at +2 and Alex Yun, competing as an individual, is at +1.

CMS won three of the four events it participated in during the 2019-20 season, including dominating the first SCIAC regular season tournament, before the pandemic kept the Stags out of action for the next year and a half.

The second day of the Cal State Intercollegiate gets underway tomorrow as CMS will try to hold on to its lead and take first place in four of its last five events, spanning the last two years.
