Mason Chiu Wins SCIAC's Lee Fulmer Player of the Year Award, Four Stags Named All-SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Mason Chiu, who finished in first place at the SCIAC Championships by a whopping seven-stroke margin, earned the Lee Fulmer Award as the conference's Athlete of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches, it was announced today.

Chiu was joined on the All-SCIAC first team by sophomore Ken Kong, while senior Alex Wrenn and junior Austin Long were selected to the second team.

In addition to his postseason championship, Chiu finished first in the overall standings for individuals after seven rounds of league competition (two regular season tournaments and the three-round postseason championship). Chiu averaged 72.14 over his seven rounds, including scores of 73 and 73 at SCIAC No. 1, and two rounds of 75 at SCIAC No. 2. Chiu then notched individual medalist honors at the SCIAC Championships after shooting a sensational 63 on day one, followed by a 71 and 75 for a three-day total of 209.

At the SCIAC Championships, Chiu played his first 30 holes of golf without a bogey before finally missing par on the 13th hole of his second round. He shot seven birdies on his way to a seven-under 63 in the opening round and reached as low as -10 before settling for a seven-shot win at five-under.

Kong also had a pair of dominant individual medalist performances in April to help the Stags to a pair of team titles and win first-team All-SCIAC honors for the second straight year. He won the second SCIAC regular season tournament by four strokes, shooting a 70 in the final round when nobody else in the field shot better than a 74. He then won The West Cup by seven strokes with a 75-68-69-212, totaling two of the three rounds in the entire field under 70, to help CMS win that championship as well.

Wrenn earned his way back on to the All-SCIAC teams for his fourth straight season with his second-team honor this spring. He has had a decorated career with the Stags, including earning All-America honors as a freshman when he helped CMS win its first-ever national title by finishing second in the NCAA Championships.

Long, meanwhile, picks up his first All-SCIAC honor of his career after finishing 16th at the SCIAC Championship, including an even-par 72 on the first round. He was also the individual medalist at the Cal State Intercollegiate in September with two rounds of 68.

CMS is awaiting a possible selection to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held May 14-17 in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The tournament field will be announced early next week.
