Ken Kong Named SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Ken Kong earned the SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week Award for events through Sunday, March 30, the league office announced today.

Kong earned the honor after running away with the individual championship at The West Cup on Monday and Tuesday at Sierra La Verne, while also leading the Stags to the team championship. After the first of three rounds on Monday morning, Kong stood in 25th place after shooting a 75, but he responded to shoot 68-69 over his final two rounds to finish with a one-under 212, seven shots better than the second-place finisher (teammate Austin Long).

Kong had a blistering finish to his day, shooting -4 over the final six holes. He had a birdie on the par-five 13th hole and then had an eagle on the par-four 14th to move below par on the day. He then added one final birdie on the 16th, helping to sew up both the individual and team titles.

With a challenging course layout, there were only three total rounds under 70 in the entire field over the two days, and Kong was responsible for two of them. His efforts helped CMS move up from sixth place after the first round into the team title, as the Stags pulled away late on Tuesday to win by nine strokes.

Kong and the Stags will be back in action this weekend at Industry Hills, where they will take part on the second SCIAC regular season championship on Saturday and Sunday.
