CHINO HILLS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team is in third place after the first day of competition at the first SCIAC regular season tournament (SCIAC #1) at Los Serranos North Course in Chino Hills.

Redlands holds the lead after the first round of two with an even-par 288, followed by La Verne at +5 and CMS at +8. Cal Lutheran also stands in a close fourth place at +10, creating the potential for a dramatic second day tomorrow.

Sophomore Mason Chiu was the top individual finisher for CMS with a 73 (+1), putting him three shots behind leader Jake Hollander of Redlands at -2. Hollander, Cameron Cooper of Redlands (-1) and Ryan Kyaw of Cal Lutheran (-1) were the only golfers of the 48 in the field to come in under par.

All six Stags in the field finished within two shots of each other, as senior Alex Wrenn and freshman Alex Yun were each +2, while sophomore Ken Kong, freshman Rishi Bhat and junior Austin Long were all +3. The six CMS golfers are all in the top half of the field, leaving open the possibility for a strong move tomorrow.

Bhat led the Stags with five birdies, including three on his first four holes to card a 34 on the front nine. Chiu ended with four birdies, including 16 and 17 to close strong.

Day two gets underway tomorrow at 10 a.m., as the Stags, who came into the week ranked No. 3 in the nation, will try to come back for the team title.
