CMS Men's Golf Finishes Eighth at CSU San Bernardino Coyote Classic

BEAUMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team, ranked No. 3 in the GCAA Division III coaches poll and No.2 in the GolfStat computer rankings, came in eighth place of 13 teams against a mostly Division II field at the CSU San Bernardino Coyote Classic in the three-round tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Oak Valley Golf Club.

CMS finished at +30 (298-301-295-894) over the three rounds in difficult weather conditions, which included a rare Southern California snow delay on Monday as a small snowstorm came through the foothills at Oak Valley to temproarily halt play. The Colorado School of Mines won the tournament with a +11, while CSU Dominguez Hills (+14) and CSU San Marcos (+16) finished second and third. 

Redlands, ranked No. 11 in Division III in the GolfStat computer rankings, edged out CMS by four strokes as the top Division III finisher with a +26 to come in sixth place overall, while La Verne (ranked No. 6) was third with a +41, 11 shots behind the Stags. 

The score for CMS was skewed a bit downward by the fact that its top finisher, sophomore Ken Kong, was playing as an individual and was not factored into the team score. Kong ended tied for seventh with a 75-70-73-218 (+2) over his three rounds, including a two-under second round. If his scores were included in the team total, CMS would have finished 13 shots better at +17.

Freshman Alex Yun also had a strong tournament, finishing just outside the top 10 with a 219, tying for 13th place. Yun carded an eagle on the first hole (his ninth hole after starting on No. 10) in the first round on Monday, and closed out the tournament with a solid 71 on Tuesday. He parred the first nine holes on Tuesday before getting a birdie on the same No. 1 hole he eagled the day before, and added another birdie on No. 4. 

Kong had an eagle as well in the third round on Tuesday on the ninth, which dropped him to two-under through 11 holes, before he settled for a 73 to close out his tournament. His 70 in the second round was the low round for a Stag at the tournament, which included four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 and one on his final hole of the round (No. 16). 

Senior Alex Wrenn ended in 26th place overall at +9 (74-76-75), while sophomore Mason Chiu was 40th with a +13, including a strong 73 in his opening round when he had three birdies. Junior Austin Long had an even par 72 on his second round with three birdies before finishing in 30th place at +10. Freshman Rishi Bhat closed the tournament with his best effort, a 74 in the third round, which featured a pair of birdies. 

Ryan Bisharat of CSU Sam Marcos had an impressive two days in the conditions to win the individual title at -8, while Preston Smith of Colorado School of Mines, the only person playing as an individual to go lower than Kong, was second with a -6. 

CMS will be back in action this weekend at Los Serranos North in Chino Hills, under likely much better weather conditions, to compete in the first SCIAC regular season tournament.
