Men's Golf Picked Sixth in Preseason Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Poll
Claremont, Calif, - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team was picked sixth in the nation in the preseason 2018-19 Bushnell Golfweek Division III poll, it was announced this afternoon.
The Stags are coming off of a successful 2017-18 campaign, which saw them sweep through the SCIAC, winning both regular season tournaments and then capturing the SCIAC Championship by 20 strokes with a -9 total over the-day event. CMS then moved on to the NCAA Division III Championship, where it finished ninth out of 42 teams with a four-day 1184, surging into a top-10 finish with a 290 (+2) in the tournament's final round.
CMS graduated several players off of last year's squad, but Alex Wrenn will be back for his senior season after earning Division III PING All-America honors last season, as well as first-team All-SCIAC and Scholar All-America distinction. Sophomore Ken Kong and junior Austin Long were also All-SCIAC selections last year, earning first-team and second-team honors, respectively.
Defending national champion Methodist earned the top spot in the preseason poll with 14 first-place votes. Emory was picked second, followed by Huntingdon, Guilford and Washington & Lee in the 3-5 spots, before the Stags came in at No. 6. Cal Lutheran (16), La Verne (T-22), and Redlands (T-22) also represented the SCIAC In the preseason top 25.
CMS opens its 2018-19 season from Sept. 16-18 when it travels to the Cal State Intercollegiate Tournament at Olivas Golf Links in Ventura, Calif.
