Par 3 struggles in opening round put Stags in middle of the pack

BEAUMONT, Calif. – Heading into the SCIAC Championships, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team stood atop the conference standings and eight strokes separated CMS from second place Cal Lutheran. CMS closed out the first round of the SCIAC Championships on April 24 tied for fourth place with a 12-over par team score of 300 on the par 72 Oak Valley Golf Course.

Redlands finished its round at 2-under par and is in first place at the Championships, 11 strokes ahead of Cal Lutheran (297). La Verne (299) is in third place and Occidental (300) is tied with CMS for fourth. CMS now is three strokes behind Redlands in the overall conference standings, with two rounds to play in the conference season.

The Stags had the lowest Par 5 scoring average (4.58) and second lowest Par 4 scoring average (4.40) in the field. Par 3 holes however provided a much greater challenge for the Stags who were 17-over par on Par 3's, worst in the field.

Individually, sophomore Jonathan Shaw (CMC) is the top Stag in the field. Shaw is tied for eighth place at 2-over par. Freshman Alex Wrenn (CMC) and senior Kethan Reddy (CMC) are tied for 15th (3-over), sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC) is tied for 18th (4-over), sophomore Jackson Zepf (CMC) is tied for 34th (9-over) and sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC) sits in a tie for 37th (10-over).
