Shuman leads the way as CMS ties for third at West Cup

LA VERNE, Calif. – At the 14-team West Cup Invitational, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team tied for third place with a three-round score of 905 at Sierra La Verne Country Club March 28-29. Just one stroke separated second place Cal Lutheran (904), CMS and Redlands (905). La Verne finished in first place (896).

Sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC) tied for 12th place and had the highest finish for the Stags. Shuman also had the low round for the Stags during the two days, a 2-over par, 72 in the first round. Overall, he finished 17-over par (227), nine strokes off the pace set by four players who tied for first place. His tournament included an eagle and 29 pars.

Two strokes behind (229), tied for 15th finished sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC) who came away with a team-high eight birdies (third overall in the field). He had rounds of 74, 79 and 76. Freshman Alex Wrenn (CMC) also had a top-20 finish (t17th – 230). His seven birdies were second on the team and his first and second round 74s were tied for the second-lowest single round scores for CMS during the event.

Senior Kethan Reddy (CMC) tied for 26th (232) and had a team-high 32 pars on 54 holes.

The Stags play in the SCIAC No. 2 Tournament on April 9-10 at Anaheim Hills Golf Club and then have the SCIAC Championships on April 24-26 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.
