First round deficit not enough to stop CMS, Shaw from winning SCIAC #1

BEAUMONT, Calif. – In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team's season preview, sophomore Johnny Brandt (CMC) talked about the importance of CMS starting off the season well, especially with the first tournament of the spring also being the first SCIAC tournament of the season.

At the season and SCIAC-opening tournament on Feb. 6-7 at the Tukwet Canyon Champions Course, the Stags got off to the start they were looking for as they finished the two-round SCIAC No. 1 Tournament in first place by eight strokes over Redlands. CMS (627) overcame a five-stroke deficit after the first round and windy conditions to top Redlands (635). Cal Lutheran (639), Occidental (652), Chapman (655), Pomona-Pitzer (657), La Verne (661) and Whittier (697) finished in third through eighth, respectively.

As a team, CMS improved nine strokes from the first round (318) to the second round (309) and sophomore Jonathan Shaw (CMC) led the charge for the Stags. He finished as the individual medalist at 4-over par (148), six shots ahead Bryan Wise of Chapman. Shaw posted a 76 in the first round and then closed the tournament with an even-par, 72 to overtake Wise.

Senior Kethan Reddy (CMC) tied for second with Wise at 10-over. Reddy shot a 76 and 78. Sophomore Joe LaHorgue (CMC) tied for 15th (163), Brandt tied for 28th (169), sophomore Matt Shuman (CMC) finished in 37th (172) and freshman Will Richardson (CMC) tied for 38th (173) and rounded out the scoring six for CMS.

The Stags head up to the Bay Area for the East/West Bay Area Invitational for their next tournament, Feb. 14-16 at Wente Vineyards Golf Club in Livermore, Calif.
