CMS Men's Basketball Rolls Past Whittier to Stay in First in SCIAC
WHITTIER, Calif. - Josh Angle recorded a game-high 25 points, making 4-of-5 three-point attempts, and TJ Askew added 19 points with three blocks as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team recorded a convincing 86-59 road win over Whittier on Saturday afternoon.
CMS now stands at 15-3 overall and 9-2 in the SCIAC after picking up its fifth win in the last six games, while Whittier fell to 8-10 overall and 3-7 in the league with the loss.
Kiran Kruse and Matt Meredith added nine points apiece for the Stags. Kruse converted 3-of-6 shots from long distance while Meredith added 10 rebounds and four assists.
Whittier did hang close for most of the first half but Angle and Meredith added a pair of three-pointers in the final two minutes to cap an 18-9 run and stretch the lead up to 42-25 at the break. Rhett Carter continued the momentum for CMS in the second half, and made a pair of free throws to stretch the Stags advantage to 54-30 with 13:46 remaining. Sam Johnson stretched the Stags lead to 56-32 after making a lay-up to cap a 14-7 run with 12:39 left in the game. CMS saw its lead jump to a commanding 33-point margin late in the half once Meredith made two free-throws with 3:15 remaining.
CMS shot 34-66 as a team on the day, good for 51.5 percent, and held a 44-34 rebounding edge. Angle led CMS with three steals, while Brian Kenyon had a game-high eight assists for a Stags unit that finished with 24 on the day.
CMS will be back in action on Monday when they travel to take on the Caltech Beavers for a 7 p.m. contest.
