Stags cruise to 90-57 win over Poets

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team put up 52 points in the first half and cruised to a 90-57 victory over Whittier College. The Stags, 10-3 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC, remain in second place in SCIAC standings behind two undefeated teams: Chapman and Cal Lutheran. On the night, senior Jack Grodahl (CMC) was 6-for-7 from behind the arc and amassed a game high 23 points.

In the first half, the Stags began the game with a 13-0 run kick-started with a dunk by junior Shelby Lane (CMC). Tyler Gaffaney (CGU) led the team with 14 points while Grodahl was responsible for 12 points. In the final second of the first half, sophomore Scott Lynds (CMC) threw up a three that got all net to give the Stags the 52-18 advantage at the half. The team shot 57% from the field and 69% from beyond the three-point arc.

Grodahl got on a roll in the second half and sunk a trio of three-pointers in a matter of just two minutes. As the clock wound down, freshman Kene Adigwe (CMC) saw some minutes and scored four points on text book layups.

CMS went up by 48 points with just over ten minutes remaining and ultimately won by 33, the largest differential against Whittier in program history.

Gaffaney and freshman Kendrick Morris (CMC) led the Stags in rebounds on the night with nine and seven respectively.

For the Poets, Nick Demusis and Louis Kurihara each had 14 points while demusis and Eric Jennings notched ten rebounds between the two of them.

CMS next faces La Verne (5-7, 1-2 SCIAC) at home on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in a double header with the Athenas.
