Long layoff doesn’t show as CMS upsets No. 16 Calvin 66-50

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Behind its three-point shooting and defense, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team upset No. 16 Calvin 66-50 on Monday evening at Ducey Gymnasium in its first game in over two weeks. With the non-conference win, CMS improved to 6-4 overall while Calvin dropped to 7-3.

CMS hit nine three-pointers in the game including six in the second half to turn a close game in the first half into a double-digit win. Junior guard Jack Grodahl led CMS with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including four three-pointers to go along with eight rebounds. Senior guard Remy Pinson added nine points with three of the team's three-pointers.

Ahead 26-20 at halftime, CMS pushed its lead to double figures to start the second half behind three-straight three-pointers from Grodahl. CMS led 28-24 and jumped ahead 37-26 with 16:17 left in the game during the 9-2 run.

CMS' largest lead of the game was 20 points at 53-33 and came with 9:10 left on a layup by sophomore forward Richard Harris. Calvin did get back within 10 points with four minutes left after a free throw by Mickey DeVries.

The CMS defense held Calvin to 33 percent shooting from the field and 26 percent shooting from the three-point line.

Senior guard Tyler Gaffaney and freshman guard Scott Lynds were in double figures for CMS with 13 points and 11 points, respectively. Gaffaney also had eight assists and six rebounds.

DeVries led Calvin with 16 points while Jordan Brink added 11 points.

CMS returns to SCIAC play on Saturday, Jan. 4 at home against Chapman for its next game.
