Joey Asta Earns Selection to D3football.com National Team of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior linebacker Joey Asta earned a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week for games through Sunday, Sept. 25, the website announced this morning.

Asta garnered the selection to the team for his role in a comeback 25-21 win over Redlands. Asta led CMS with eight tackles, seven of which were solo, and four of which were for losses, including two quarterback sacks totaling 17 yards.

In addition, Asta almost singlehandedly blew up the final Redlands threat to help seal the win. After the Stags scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to turn a 21-12 deficit into a 25-21 lead, the Bulldogs picked up two first downs to move the ball to their own 41-yard line.

Asta, though, ended things right there, hitting the Redlands ball-carrier in the backfield for no gain on first down. Then, after an incomplete pass, Asta had two straight sacks, knocking the Bulldogs back seven yards on 3rd-and-10, and 10 more yards on 4th-and-17 to turn the ball back over to the Stags.

Redlands did get the ball back one more time, but needing to go 85 yards in 55 seconds with no timeouts. The game ended four plays later, though, as Asta flushed Bulldog quarterback Myles Herrera out of the pocket on a play that ended with an incomplete pass.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it opens SCIAC play with a road game at La Verne, beginning at 1 p.m.
