CMS Falls to Redlands in Battle of 2018 SCIAC Co-Champions

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team faced Redlands on Saturday at Zinda Field in a battle between the two teams that tied for first in the SCIAC last year, with CMS earning the automatic bid due to its 20-10 win over Redlands, but this time the Bulldogs were able to come out on top with a 45-6 win on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Nathan Martinez rushed for four first-half touchdowns for No. 24 Redlands, which improves to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play. CMS slips to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in league play with the loss.

Sophomore kicker Alessandro Maiuolo provided one of the highlights for the Stags on the day, kicking a career-best 52-yard field goal, as well as a 21-yarder to account for the CMS points. First-year linebacker Christopher Wicke also provided his first career interception, while sophomore safety Stiles Satterlee had a huge day on defense with 16 tackles, 10 of which were solo.

Redlands opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal at the 9:26 mark, before Martinez carried in twice in the first quarter, the first from five yards out with 6:21 left, and hte second from nine yards with 3:52 to go. He added a third touchdown on the first drive of the second quarter to make it 24-0, before Maiuolo put CMS on the board with a 21-yarder with 6:01 to play.

Martinez, though, capped off the half with his fourth touchdown with 39 seconds left to push the lead to 31-3 at the break. He then threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter, both of which came on short shuffle passes behind the line of scrimmage, a 13-yarder to Mason Carvalho and a five-yarder to Kai Thompson.

Senior running back Jonah Cartwright helped get CMS into field goal range with a 13-yard carry on 3rd-and-1 at the 50. He added another rush to the 32-yard line, before Redlands came up with a sack to force the ball back to the 35-yard line. Maiuolo then came on to attempt the long field goal with a slight wind in his favor, and he booted the 52-yarder through with room to spare.

Cartwright led CMS with 32 yards rushing, while junior Carter Henderson and sophomore Brian Loudermilk Jr. each had three catches for 36 yards and 30 yards, respectively.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Occidental for another 1 p.m. contest at Zinda Field.
