Cheadle Adds D3football.com National Team of the Week Honor Following Record-Breaking Performance

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior running back Garrett Cheadle earned a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week for games through Oct. 28, the website announced today.

Cheadle adds the D3football.com honor to the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award, which he received yesterday for his part in helping Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improve to 5-0 in SCIAC play with a 34-21 win over Whittier on Saturday.

In the Whittier contest, Cheadle broke the longstanding CMS single-game rushing record with 274 yards, surpassing the old mark of 261, which was set by Chris Dabrow against La Verne in 1987. Cheadle had a huge first half, rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns over the first 30 minutes, with his touchdown runs coming from 30, 52 and 75 yards.

The 75-yard run, his third score of the half, also put him over 1,000 yards for the season, making him the first running back at CMS to hit that milestone since Ryan Gocong in 2002. With two regular season games remaining, and a possible NCAA Tournament bid if the Stags can win one of their last two games, Cheadle (1,104 yards) has a chance to pass Dabrow's single-season record of 1,486 yards from the 1987 season as well.

The 1987 season also marked the last time that the Stags won the SCIAC title. At 5-0 with two games left, CMS can win its first league crown in 31 years if it can defeat either Chapman at home this Saturday (1 p.m.) at Zinda Field, or its final game at Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 10.
