CMS Baseball Celebrates Senior Day with Walk-Off Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team held its senior day on Saturday for a doubleheader against Caltech, and one of the players honored, catcher Adam Dapkewicz, capped off the day with a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Stags finished off a 24-1, 5-4 sweep.

With the two wins, CMS improves to 26-10 overall and 14-7 in the SCIAC, moving into a tie for second place in the standings, three-games behind league-leading La Verne, who it plays next weekend. Caltech falls to 1-23 in the league with the two losses.

The Stags fell behind Caltech in the nightcap 4-3, but tied it in the seventh, as Rider Gordon walked, moved to second on a single from Nate Seluga, went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Blaise Heher, and then came home on a sacrifice fly from senior Tyler Shaw

Andrew Blackett retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth, finishing the game by retiring the last 11 batters he faced to get the win. That set the table for Dapkewicz, who led off the ninth with a solo homer to straightaway center field to end the game and give CMS the sweep.

In the opening game, Dillon Martin was 3-for-5 with two homers and eight RBI, recording a grand slam, a two-run homer and a two-run double to his credit. Gordon, Didrickson and Heher each had three RBI and Joey Wilson added a three-run homer.

CMS scored seven times in the first inning to take control, as Martin hit a two-run shot and Gordon had a two-run single. The Stags then scored nine times in the third, with Martin's grand slam breaking it open, while Heher had a two-run double.

CMS added eight more runs in the fourth, as Wilson, Didrickson and Heher all hit home runs. Jackson Hisey went four innings to get the win, allowing two hits, while Henry Connell, Matthew Bergan and Bryant Smaaladen each threw a shutout inning in relief.

Shaw and Dapkewicz were among the six seniors honored between games, along with Julian Sanders, Kieran Sidebotham, Jake Tracey and Pieter van Wingerden

The Stags will meet La Verne next week with a chance to pull even for first place with a three-game sweep. The series will start with a single game on Friday at Pomona-Pitzer.
