19-run offensive onslaught puts Stags past Wesleyan

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team broke out for 19 runs in the single game against Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon. With the 19-4 win, the Stags improve to 9-8 on the season and handed the Cardinals their third loss.

Freshman Justin Hull (CMC) caused Wesleyan to go three-up, three-down in the first three innings of the day. In six innings of work he scattered six hits and struck out eight. As the game wore on, the Cardinals started knocking and put up a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth. But the Stags' offense was undeniably hot on Sunday and had provided plenty of a cushion for Hull to work with.

Sophomore Ryan Motter (CMC) got things going in his first at bat with a single out to center. Motter reached base on four occasions in the game and scored all four times. Junior Trey Smith (CMC) and sophomore Nick DeGallier (CMC) got the first RBIs of the day while Wesleyan got out of the first inning with just allowing two runs for the Stags.

CMS' aggressiveness from the box and on the base paths continued in the second. Wesleyan's starter struggled with his control as the Stags got a few bases from wild pitches and walks. Then, junior Chase Eller (CMC) came up with the big hit for a stand-up bases-clearing double to the right center gap, scoring three. A pair of walks and a hit by pitch later, freshman Henri Levenson (CMC) drove in two more with a single to right. All told, the Stags scored seven in the frame to take the 9-0 lead.

The Cardinals got four back with a homer by Ryan Earle in the fourth and then a two RBI double by Danny Rose in the sixth, but the Stags countered two runs in the sixth and then capped off the game with six more in the eighth inning.

Sophomore Spencer Abraham (CMC) led off the bottom of the eighth with a big double up the hill in left. Two walks later, junior Alex Clemens (CMC) drove in Abraham and freshman Emmett Covello (CMC) with an opposite field double. The third double of the inning came off the bat of sophomore Pat Shore (CMC). The Stags even batted around in the eighth as Abraham ultimately made the final out.

Eller and Levenson each ended the day with three hits and three RBI. Motter and Clemens also each had two hits in the game.

Freshman Cameron Cash (CMC) earned the save after throwing three shutout innings to close out the game. On the day, the Stags hitters drew 10 walks while the CMS pitchers only allowed one.

Next up for the Stags is another single game to wrap up the California Classic. CMS will face Bard College today, March 20, at 3 p.m.
