Strong No. 10 Master’s College take down Stags in home opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team opened up their 2016 season with a loss to Master's College 19-7. The Stags put together a couple strong innings but the Mustangs' explosive 4-0 lead in the first inning was too much to overcome.

The Master's College was the Golden State Athletics Conference (NAIA) regular season champion in 2015 and is currently ranked No. 10 in the coaches' association preseason poll.

The Mustangs got on the board early with a three-run shot by Collin Nyenhuis by the top of the first. Unfortunately, the Stags pitchers walked a handful of batters in the first three innings and the Mustangs were able to put eight on the board with only three hits.

The Stags' fourth inning was when the offense came alive. After a double play to begin the inning, CMS strung together four hits on two outs to score three runs. Junior Evan Opperman (CMC) got things going with a single into left and then scored on a hit by sophomore Nolan Anderson (CMC). Another sophomore, Trey Smith (CMC) doubled out to the hill in left field and then both he and Anderson scored on freshman Nick DeGallier's (CMC) single out to center field.

The other offense from the Stags came in the bottom of the eighth, as daylight waned. Freshman Ryan Motter (CMC) and sophomore Alex Clemens (CMC) hit back to back triples to either side of the Mustangs' center fielder. Sophomore Samuel O'Braitis (CMC) was on base with a single and was driven in by Motter.

On the Stags' pitching staff, Andre Simoneau (CMC) was the most effective on the day. He went one and two thirds innings and struck out three.

The Stags still smacked 11 hits on the day despite a few of The Master's College pitchers throwing in the high eighties. Each of Motter and Opperman had two hits in the game.

CMS (0-1) next hosts Willamette University (3-1) from the Northwest Conference on Friday, Feb. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
